Sitia is the main town of East Crete. With 9000 inhabitants it is a lively little town and tourism is not a major activity, even though it has a lovely beach.
Sitia is a working town with a busy atmosphere but also manages to stay laid back. It is also a very pretty town with a very pleasant sea front lined with cafés and tavernas. It is not really made for tourists even though you will see plenty of them.
Sitia offers a few pleasant town hotels which get quickly full up in the summer months. A good choice of restaurants which are mainly lining the sea front could be found in Sitia. Prices are maybe a little lower than in other Cretan towns. You will find most things in Sitia eventhough it offers less choice than large cities such as Heraklion or Chania. A few bars and discos which are mainly (but not only) frequented by the locals is the only nightlife Sitia has to offers.
Sitia has an excellent over 1 km long sandy beach. It is clean, even has showers, offers beautiful views of the town and is rarely overcrowded. It would be perfect but for the fact that it is a little too near the road that leads out of town towards the far east of the island.
